To create a sanctuary where God can be experienced through natural living.
Living Sanctuary is dedicated to creating a self-sustainable Hare Krsna community in the Freestate, South Africa. Our principle is simple living and high thinking. Everything we do, we do as an act of love to Krsna. We incorporate principles of permaculture, animal husbandry, reliance on nature as much as possible, as well as a strong spiritual practice and sadhana.
AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
Our main source of inspiration and guidance is Srila Prabhupada. He has given clear instructions on how to weave together spiritual practice with meeting human needs. You can read more about him here.

Join Our Living Sanctuary as a Volunteer and Community Member
Currently our facilities to host and house people are limited, but soon that will change and we will be able to open the doors to many more people. If you are interested in getting involved, or just to visit, please reach out to us here.

Hectares of land we have access to
Currently, we are using about 2 hectares, and have almost achieved full food self-reliance in less than six months.
Unlimited
Water
Ok, nothing is unlimited, but the amount of water available is near unlimited and allows us to do a lot more than one can normally do in a semi-arid climate.
6
Months
And the only things that we aren’t producing ourselves is rice, wheat, dhal, and fuel. We’ll take care of that real soon!

Cow and a calf
And more to come soon! Cow-protection is one of our most important principles. We take care of each other.
Welcome to Living Sanctuary: Our Story and Mission
Discover how Living Sanctuary cultivates self-sufficiency through permaculture and cow protection, fostering a vibrant community focused on spiritual and environmental harmony.
Building a Self-Sustainable Farm Rooted in Devotion
Producing our own food, clothing, medicine, and other materials is a keystone to our project. Full dependence on Krsna is our goal.

Cow protection
Cow protection is one of the fundamental principles of human civilization. Our goshala, or cow sanctuary, is meant for cows and bulls to live peacefully and in harmony with humans.
Healing retreats
Healing of mind, body, and spirit is important. We will host retreats to facilitate recovery and rejuvination, such as Ayurvedic pancha-karma retreats, kirtan retreats, and more.

Education
Education is empowerment. We will facilitate various workshops to empower individuals with the skills necessary to replicate this project elsewhere. Some of the programs include natural building, permaculture, cow protection, and vedanta philosophy. As the community grows, it will also include a gurukula, or traditional school for children.
Community
What kind of life is one lived for oneself? As facilities increase, there will be more opportunities for interested individuals to become a part of this amazing project. There is some much potential for service here and there is a niche for everyone.

Volunteer
Soon there will be a dormitory and campsite available for those who want to visit or for woofers who want to volunteer and learn essential skills.
